Battement- [bat-MAH] Beating. can be done as "grand battement" or as "petite battement" both of which have many forms including en cloche or as battement jete (grand) or sur le cou-de-pied, frappe, tendu, or degage (petite).

Yep, we do work hard. The dancing on the toes is called pointe work. It uses special shoes with very hard boxes and shanks (the parts of the shoe covering the toe and bottom of the foot) to support the foot while dancing en pointe.
