NBC UNVEILS 'SUPERSTARS OF DANCE’, AN HISTORIC DANCE COMPETITION EVENT FEATURING THE MASTERS OF DANCE GENRES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

NBC recently announced the premiere of a new dance competition reality show, Superstars Of Dance (formerly title "Superstar Dancers Of The World"). It seems like it could go either way: horrible or amazing. Each team will feature two soloists, one duo, and one large group. It's rumored that some ex-SYTYCDers will be competing on the American team.

Here's the press release:

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., November 14, 2008 - NBC will broadcast "Superstars Of Dance" a breathtaking international dance competition led by executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller, two of the masterminds behind "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance" and hosted by Michael Flatley ("Lord of the Dance"). For broadcast in early 2009, the unique series will pit the masters of various dance genres from eight countries against each other. Equal parts sporting event, rock concert and artistic exhibition, "Superstars Of Dance" is poised to become one the greatest spectacles of dance performance ever seen on television.

The announcement was made by Craig Plestis, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Development and Specials, NBC Entertainment.

"This dance competition is very much like the Olympics," said Plestis. "The physical feats these athletes and artists pull is mind-blowing, and we're so excited to form what we hope will be the definitive dance competition to decide which nation has what it takes to be the best of the best in the world. With so much at stake, this is sure to be a roller coaster, and you never know what will happen next. Plus, with Nigel and Simon running the show, it will be done first class all the way."

"This is the most challenging and exhilarating project I've ever done," said Lythgoe. "Nothing of this magnitude has ever been attempted before on television. We will bring to America different cultural styles of dancers -- each performer the best in their genre -- and the sheer mosaic of styles and energy is going to be nothing short of awe-inspiring."

Eight countries will participate in the competition with each team comprised of two soloists, one duo and one larger group. Viewers will get to know the competitors and the coaches through the trials and tribulations, both behind the scenes and on the stage. The stakes are high for these artists, as they are not only representing themselves, but also their dance form and their entire nation.

The eight countries currently scheduled to participate include: Ireland, India, USA, Argentina, China, Russia, South Africa and Australia. The dance styles that will be represented on the show will be announced at a later date.

"Superstars Of Dance" is from 19 Entertainment. Nigel Lythgoe ("American Idol," "So You Think You Can Dance") and Simon Fuller ("American Idol," "So You Think You Can Dance") are the executive producers.

The show will premiere on January 5th and air through January 26th.

Stay on your toes,

Selly

The judges were so wrong with judging the duo team for USA low.

I was so mad.

First of, the judge from Venezuela needs to get shot, she's giving everyone really low scores when the performers have done great. Second, the idea of not letting a judge vote for their own country backfired when the judges are giving sucky scores to keep their country afloat. This show SUCKS!!!

Who are these random performers. I watched Indian dancers, but I don't think they are from India, and they don't have basic knowledge about the same. I am not sure about the other countries, but attaching name of a country to such random performers is not what I expected from NBC.

Wow this show is BOGUS! All the dancers were HORRIBLE, and they gave them 8's and 9's, but gave USA 7's on their solo? All the other country's did was jump around, kick their legs in the air, and jump in the air and roll around on the ground.....at least USA had actual TALENT in their dances. Whoever came up with this show is a retard. How are you gonna base all the countries dancing on the most horrible dancers they could find???? Learn what DANCE means before putting it on TV please. I swear people are getting more and more retarded everyday.

I'm guessing the producers of this show didn't have time to scout for REAL dancing talent, cause that was really lame last night. There were some really amatuer dancers up there. Terrible show!

This show is horrible because of the judging period. I agree that people are getting more and more retarded, but because they don't know how to appreciate other cultures and their interpretations of dance. This would've been better off on another channel without the judging, and just showing dances of different countries around the world. Guess people only want competition with winners and losers, rather than maybe learning something new and DIFFERENT.

how did they decide which countries were participating?

how come so many get left out?

This show is making me mad. First, of all the judging is wrong. The tap dancer for the USA team deserved higher scores. How can you take people who know nothing about a specific type of dance to judge that dance? That's like putting a hip hop dancer as a judge of a neo-classical ballet show? Not going to work. Realize that and even if the US doesn't make it through completely. This is a US show, you WILL lose ratings of the US don't win or come to the final two countries. Realize that you bleeding idiots. Oh and the Chinese judge, he OBVIOUSLY does not know anything about dance outside of his traditionaldance. Send him packing!

This show is stupid and the dancing is terrible. Why is it that the chinese judge speaks no english and wears traditional monk outfit? It is kind of racism isn't it? To be consistent the pakistan guy should wear a turban, the African guy should be nake and the Russian should be drinking vodka. They can't find an english speaking chinese guy?? This show is retarded....it will start WW3...all the judges hate each other.

i think they need to change the judging panel because they lack knowledge for certain dances.ex: tap dancing.they told her she needed to give give them something better but that was probably one of the greatest tap dancers i ever saw in my life. another example the partnering between america ive never seen partnering as crazy as that. all of the judges has very little knowledge of dance. some other groups like the chinese people when the girl was on point on the guys sholder. they didnt give them credit for the difficulty of what they were bringing to the table. they was also bringing something new to the world and thats something i think counts. the tapping was good on both side australia and usa. i personally thought the u.s. took the tapp dancing by far but they gave the australian guy more points. i felt they gave the russian ballet dancer allot of points just because she was a ballet dancer she was good but just as good as the average person. i feel that the judging is really bad and they need more people experienced with all the dance styles. theres allot to say about it.they dont give any credit for difficulty. they need to pick a better judging panel. oooooh yeah and the popper robert murraine was doing really crazy things. but they were hatting on him because he was poppin and not doing somethig like ballroom or ballet. there were some horrible acts that got high scores and good acts that got bad scores. i personally know better judges for the show just because they are good judges.

I think they should have had the Miley and Mandy Cru there to dance as an special guest that would have been awesome! USA all the way!!!

This show is terrible. All the dances that are being performed are more than just their "dancing difficulty". They each are deeply culturally significant, with rich heritage and meaningful value. You can't expect them to change a style or dance's character just so they can be competitive on this show. Comparing and judging the dances with our limited ethnocentric values was a stupid idea to begin with and is like comparing apples and oranges. Many of the performers are champions in their respective fields and I applaud them for going out there and performing spectacularly despite getting judged so arbitrarily. The dancers are amazing, but the show concept reeks of ignorance. I would love to continue watching the dancers, but this show is perpetuating dance on such a black and white level - it is superficial and is not understanding or appreciating the styles for what they are. TV goers - don't even bother supporting this show. It is totally focusing on the wrong idea.

The Worst show I've seen on tv for a long time. It could have been a lot better if thought out a little longer.

They must have a 5 year old operating the camera. The pans, angles and closeups are horrible. They cut the dances apart. They have done a terrible injustice to all the hard work and effort these performers have put in. I will not watch the rest of this poorly produced competition.

The camera angles and pans, and the lighting pointed at the cameras are so horrible I cannot get past it enjoy the dancing.

This is a TERRIBLE show. Maybe if it was JUST A TALENT/VARIETY show it may work. BUT as a show with judges (awful, I might add) who are judging genres of dance they don't even understand nor have experience with is RIDICULOUS! Also, the CAMERA work is completely PATHETIC. I tried to watch the feet and they were close up on the face or moving around too fast making me dizzy. Looks like their first day on the job. I refuse to watch it again. REALLY BAD SHOW. Too bad for Michael Flatley, he seems like a nice guy.

alright so there are a few things that I wanted to say. First off, were there no INFORMED judges on that show? I mean jeez! The only judges that actually knew what they were talking about were the american, australian and the russian! even they had their faults. The argentinian judge and the south african one pissed me off to no end. how in any world is it fair to give the african seizure girl 9s and 10s but the chinese duo that had people dancing on their BACK 7s. And the american tap dancer was a amazing, i wanted to throttle that south african judge when he told her she wasn't good enough. and if that argentinian judge fluttered her hands one more time in disdain...I'm telling you someone should have ripped her freakin' arms off. This show was horrible if only for the judges. screw the judges let them dance and have the people decide!

I decided to write an article for my university blog site about a specific issue in the judging of this show. Please read and leave a comment!

Thank you!

I would have preferred for the show producers, director to have done some more research before choosing the team to represent india. Nakul and his team are good, but not good enough to compete at this level, where other team members are world champions. They should have brought a team/troupe from india who have actually performed and choregraphed for bollywood movies. Names that come to mind are: Shiamak Dawar, Saroj Khan who are veterans in indian and bollywood dancing and based in india. No offense to Nakul, but his attitude isn't great either...India is being misrepresented in this show!

I totally agree that this show was a major disappointment. If only it was as good as the previews made it look. This show really missed its potential: the judging is completely pointless and the show really lacks any energy. I love watching any kind of dancing (even if the dancing is not at a professional level) and would have liked the show a lot better if they didn't make it an elimination competition with judges who don't seem to know what they're talking about (or who don't speak English at all).

I hate this show
i just really dont appreciate how all the judges are so biased especially the south american judge
but i love the chinese guy
he is so cute!
oh and i like the russian to
the american judge kinda seems like a poser to me he just kinda goes along w/ wat everyone else says
get some real dancers up there
not some stuck up pretentious people
besides some are sooo good but the judges cant appreciate them
and the american breakdancing team sucks
get someone like jabberwocky or Hok
B.T.Y. SYTYCD is so much more exciting and dynamic
all the dances on the show are dissapointing
anyone even remotely entertaining gets kicked off of the show

This is a really good show, the dancing that is. The judges are a bunch of IDIOTS! The South African judge is the worse. He critiques the dancers as if he could do better, honestly I'd like to see him try. These people have no idea what it takes to perform like these dancers. I really wish the producers will take these idiots off if this show comes back for a second season.

This show insults myself and all those around the world that truly enjoy all the different international dances. How does anyone have the right to judge one culture against another? This show isn't judging dance. It is polarizing cultures. Luckily most of us can see past this garbage.
Honestly, we would, all, enjoy this show if the host were dancing, all the judges got a real job they might might know about, and all the dancers would just dance for our entertainment.
Producers, wake up. This isn't "International Idol"; not even close.

Not a very good show at all! Host should have stuck with dancing..very flat speaker, not much personality.

Majority of the judges seem to NOT be qualified to judge the wide variety of dances. Plus, they do not seem to be fair or consistant on all their scoring...the US judge included. Come on... a "4" and a "10" on one of the solo dances. Really? There can be THAT MUCH difference in judging the same dance?

Dances themselves are not always "dancing" so much as strength/gymnastic/athletic routines. The only reason people have even watched this at all is because there is nothing else on this month on Monday night. Can't wait until Chuck and Heros is back.

I like the South African judge, he is good looking and his comments are alright. The Chinese judge doesn't speak english at all except the numbers from 1 to 10 (I'm Chinese myself and I'm a bit stumped on this one).

My husband and I absolutely love to watch good dancers. There have been some excellent dancers on the show; however, the judges suck! I'm afraid politics and a need to support your own country makes the judging terrible. The concept was good assuming you could get honorable judges. Perhaps it would be better if the scores were not made available to the judges until the end of the show. Also, when a judge is so flagrantly unfair (S. Afrida, Australia, etc), perhaps he can either be replaced or at least corrected by the show's producers. The concept of the show is great; the judges, for the most part, are horrible.

Please make changes to the scoring anyway.

Thanks,
Sharon Williams

I would not be surprised if someone has already commented on this and I happened to miss it in one of the posts, but I am particularly disappointed that the videographers for the show have not focused on the dancers' feet. I'm a ballroom dancer and know that the feet are often more important, or at least just as important, as the rest of the body...and I've been really upset that there have been some great dancers and we've not been able to see their feet!!! GAH!!! I'd love to watch the show more, but I've been too frustrated.
On the other hand, GO USA and GO GROOVALOOS - these guys are incredible!!
